MY LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Learning sign language was a total blast but also a failure. I knew, before I even started, that I wouldn't be able to learn everything about it in the short amount of time provided. There are just so many signs you have to memorize. It's just like learning a different language.

DIFFERENT SIGN LANGUAGES ALL AROUND THE WORLD!!

American Sign Language is definitely not universal. Sign Language is different in every country, because of the different cultural and linguistic influences.

DENIED REQUEST

I went to Mrs Pauli and asked if i could drop a class, in order to focus on learning sign language, but she said we could talk about it later, but has not contacted me since. I was really looking forward into sharing a class with hearing impaired students. Unfortunately, I made the request a little bit too late.

WHAT IS SUCCESS?

The word success is just like the word beauty. We all have different perceptions of  it. What is success to one may not be to another but no one can deny that success includes achieving your goals... And achieving your goals means being happy. Therefore, success means happiness. They both are a journey, not a destination. Just like how one can't constantly be happy, you also can't always be successful.

BERTHA...

This is a conversation I had with a hearing impaired friend, (we had a conversation on paper):
-Me: What's your name
-Her:Bertha
-Me: You can sit with us if you want to, you don't have to sit alone.
-Her: Mayble. I am stay sitting but up!
-Me: Well, just come whenever you want!
I realized that she did not speak English very well. Because sometimes I would ask her questions and get answers that had nothing to do with what I asked. Honestly, I use to think talking to her would be easy because I thought I could still converse with her on paper but reality is I can't really communicate with her. She can't understand me and i can't understand her but we want to be friends and it's really frustrating.

IS ASL FOR YOU?

IS ASL FOR YOU?
  • Keep in mind that language learning is first of all an interactive and social process. If you enjoy meeting and having conversations with new people, chances are you'll enjoy ASL.
  • Also, learning a language is not just about learning vocabulary. You will also be learning grammatical structures and idioms. It really demands focus.

  • While most people report enjoying it, others who are auditory learners have a very difficult time processing visual information. Since ASL is a visual language, auditory learners will probably have a hard time learning it.
